![]() The best viewing is during the first few weeks of May, with the number of insects dwindling slowly week by weeks following that. It's dark enough in these mountains that the glowing insects can be seen easily and they're often visible between the months of May and June, disappearing shortly after that. These mountains have always had a mysterious air about them with a long history, and witnessing hundreds of fireflies lighting up at once only adds to that. The best place in the country to see fireflies is the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. that often see the most firefly activity. If you're itching for that magic once again, these are the destinations around the U.S. As adults, there's still some magic left to this shimmering display and there's a sense of child-like wonder every time we're privy to seeing one of these light shows. As kids, we may not have known exactly what they were or how their bioluminescence worked but it was spectacular all the same. There's something truly magical in experiencing fireflies - also known as lightning bugs - for the first time. Suddenly, lights begin appearing in the distance it starts with one and others soon follow it. Maybe there was a cool breeze or perhaps it was just still, with the last few rays of sunlight disappearing in the west. ![]() The habitat of Congaree is also slightly more unique than others with synchronous fireflies in that it’s more swampy and known as an “old growth floodplain forest”.Many people have this memory: As a child, walking out into the backyard on a warm, humid summer night. For two weeks in late May and early June the fireflies in Congaree will blink in unison on evenings with the right weather conditions. Just like locations in Tennessee and Pennsylvania, Photinus carolinus is the species of firefly responsible for putting on a synchronized display here. Congaree National ParkĬongaree National Park is located in South Carolina and probably one of the least known areas for synchronous fireflies in North America. The WMA has largely been untouched since WWII, and very few people are allowed to transverse most of the area, as it is controlled access however, there are greenways and access points that are open for hiking and wildlife viewing during the day. Oak Ridge is in east Tennessee near Knoxville, and the WMA is part of the U.S. In the summer of 2015, an abundant population of these fireflies was found in the Oak Ridge WMA forests. Viewing is limited and controlled by a lottery. The park does offer guided viewings of the flashing events. The park contains 2,076 acres of scenic wilderness in Unicoi County, in the southern Appalachian Mountains of East Tennessee. The species responsible for the displays is Photinus carolinus.
